Thobekile Mbanda

Affectionately known as Ntomb’Yelanga, Thobekile Mbanda is a conceptual artist, community activist and uses music as her medium and muse. Her work is centred around the preservation, promotion and development of indigenous instruments and music, which fuels her current project Songs of our Ancestors. Among her trajectory of creative pursuits: in 2014, while in Barbados, Mbanda wrote and produced a play about Princess Magogo The Rise of A Star; she is the founder of Abancane Art Academy that strives to preserve indigenous languages through multiple art creative activities for children.

Ntomb'Yelanga has performed locally and internationally, and is constantly developing her repertoire for working with young people and the intersection of music, learning, decolonization and freedom.
