Maretha Davel

Maretha is a South African musician, music teacher and composer. Born in Pretoria, South Africa, she was educated at the University of Pretoria where she completed a B.Mus., B.Mus. Hons. and M.Mus. Her fields of specialisation are flute and music theory.

Maretha left South Africa in 2004 to live and work in the UK (England and Scotland) until 2011 when she moved with her family to the San Francisco Bay Area (East Bay), where she still resides. Maretha teaches music part-time from her home and at Sunol Glen School. She will be starting with a Master of Arts degree in Composition at California State University, East Bay, in August 2020.

Apart from writing and arranging music, Maretha’s areas of interest are women’s identity in music, South African women composers, music education and music technology.

She strives to establish an effective and useful connection between the music communities in South Africa and the East Bay, with the focus on women.
