Fiona Tozer

Fiona Tozer was born in England in 1953 and spent her childhood moving between Scotland and various African countries. At the age of fourteen she taught herself to play guitar, and started composing songs and performing solo and with several groups. Arriving in South Africa in 1980, Tozer established herself as part of the local music scene, co-founding the Durban Folk Club in 1986, and performing solo and with various bands at venues and music festivals around the country. She has recorded five albums of original music; one with the band Odyssey, three solo CDs, and her latest project with the duo Quark, which sees her move on from her folk/acoustic-rock roots to the fusion of different genres. She has set up a small home studio, where she records tracks for her own projects, and albums for friends.

In 2001 Tozer started formally studying music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where she received her masters degree in Composition with distinction in 2008. She has had works performed by the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet from Sweden and the Schubert Ensemble from London, and has had works commissioned by performers in Lithuania, Britain and the Faroe Islands, as well as by the South African Music Rights Association. In her capacity as music administrator, she has worked as concert organiser at the university, as administrator for the KZN Youth Orchestra, and served as treasurer on the board of NewMusicSA from 2007 to 2010.
