Andrea Hobson

Andrea Hobson is a brass performer, music educator and composer. She was a finalist in the Lubner music competition and was awarded the Lubner MAID music scholarship. She studied at Rhodes University and the University of the Free State under Prof David Scarr and Dr Paul Loeb van Zuilenberg. She graduated in 2010 with a Masters in Music, majoring in Euphonium performance, Brass pedagogy and Composition.

Andrea has performed with the CPO, KZNPO, ECPO, Windworx and CT Concert Brass . She performed as principal trombonist in the South African National Youth Orchestra and principal euphonist in the Wind Orchestra, and conducted and tutored for the East London Wind Orchestra course.

Internationally, Andrea played principal trombone with the Bern Youth Orchestra in Switzerland. She conducted the Zimbabwean National Musicamp Wind Band in 2013 and 2017. She attended the International Euphonium Tuba Festival in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2014 and was awarded the Earl L. Louder award to attend the same festival in 2018. Andrea received a scholarship to attend the International Music Festival in Pelotas, Brazil, in 2015.

She has been involved in projects as composer, and arranger, with Proboscis, the Baobab Trio and the Shhart ensemble. She composed for euphonium soloists, brass band, brass ensemble and orchestra, which have been performed in the USA, the UK, Singapore, Germany and South Africa. She founded the Southern African Tuba and Euphonium Association.

She is based in Jena, Germany, and teaches lower brass, band and theory at the Orchesterschuler KLANGwelt. She is the principal euphonium for Brass Band BlechKLANG, plays trombone and euphonium for the Brass Band BlechKLANG Soloist ensemble and plays tuba for the Show Brass Band VielKLANG.
