Amy Crankshaw

Port Elizabeth-born Amy Crankshaw is a composer currently based in London, UK. Her music has been described as ‘highly engaging’, ‘inventive’ and ‘distinctive’.

Amy’s current appointments include a new piece for Festival Présences, commissioned by Radio France (2021, Paris); the Opéra de-ci de-là residency with the European Network of Opera Academies at Festival International d’Art Lyrique Aix-en-Provence (2021, Aix-en-Provence); and a tuba composition for Ricardo Carvalhoso of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.

Together with librettist Clare Best, Amy recently composed her first opera The Apothecary for performance at Silk Street Theatre, London, in 2021.

Amy participated in the Opera Creation Workshop at Festival International d’Art Lyrique Aix-en-Provence in 2019, and was composer-in-residence with the London City Orchestra in 2016.

She was awarded 2nd prize in SAMRO’s International Scholarship for Composers in 2014. Her piano trio From the Valley of Desolation is featured in Volume 12 (second issue) of The Journal of the Musical Arts in Africa, published in December 2015.

Amy studied her Master’s Degree in Composition at the South African College of Music under Hendrik Hofmeyr (2015), and completed an M.A. in Opera-Making and Writing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under Julian Philips (2020).

She is currently studying for her Doctorate of Music in composition through practice-based research at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
