Kate de Gruchy

Kate de Gruchy graduated with a B.Mus. from the University of Cape Town in 2019 where she specialised in composition, music technology and piano. She is a classical pianist by training, although her own music tends more towards contemporary and jazz style, She also plays guitar and has enjoyed some vocal training, although her focus is heavily on composition and writing, and has performed her music at the South African College of Music, the University of Leeds, Northern Guitars in Leeds and Siné in Dublin.

Kate is currently thoroughly enjoying exploring the many different avenues of making music but is most focused on song-writing and music technology, enjoying the freedom to create her own music and produce it herself. Her influences range from music concrete to electronic dance music, as well as a lyrical and symbolic tendency towards social and political messages, with protest music featuring heavily in her field of interests. At the moment her music is taking an audio-visual format with YouTube being such an appealing and malleable platform and the audio-visual format allowing for extra creativity and expression. She is hoping to work with many other musicians and artists over the years and is especially keen to work with female musicians. She currently resides in Johannesburg where she is making music, teaching piano, theory and aural, and furthering her studies in the School of Social Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand.
