Chantal Willie-Petersen
Chantal received a double Masters in Voice and Double Bass, cum laude, from The Royal Conservatory of Music, Antwerp and LUCA School of Arts in Belgium (2007). Her awards include The Oranje Beurs; SAMRO Merit Award and Best Performance of a SA Work (2009), and nomination for the Top 50 Female Musicians in Belgium'(2007).
She toured with Grammy-nominated band Zap Mama (2003 – 2007), and has worked with artists such as Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Common, and Tania Maria. Chantal features in French movie Essaye Moi (alongside Lizz Wright, 2007); on Zap Mama albums Ancestry in Progress (2004) and Super Moon (2007); and as bassist on SA vocalist Lisa Bauer’s album Finding A New Way (SAMA nominated – Best Jazz album, 2009).
Her performances at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Red Sea Jazz Festival (Israel), Montreux Jazz Festival, Hollywood Bowl (LA), WOMAD; Blue Note (Japan), Makhanda Jazz Festival, Blue Note Festival (Belgium), Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Joy of Jazz Festival, Imbokodo Jazz Festival (2017), and Pop Idols (Belgium 2003-2004) are highly celebrated.
She has performed with Toots Thielemans, Jack van Poll, Stacey Rowles, Mark Murphy, The Jeanne Lee - Kirk Lightsey Group (Sette Jazz Festival), France; the Feya Faku Quintet; Dove Award artist Neville D, Robbie Jansen, Winston Mankunku, Taliep Petersen, Madosini and Dizu Plaatjies. Her recent collaboration is with acclaimed US saxophonist/composer Ernest Dawkins in The Englewood-Soweto Exchange (2019).
She was co-editor for the SAMRO Archives of SA Indigenous Music (2020); researcher for the NAC (2011-2012); lecturer at the International Network of Female Jazz Musicians, Norway (2009); composer for the Cape Town Goema Orchestra (2011-2013) and curator for the Jazz Wits Voice Masterclass Series (2020). Chantal is a lecturer at WITS University.
