Bongile Lecoge-Zulu works across the disciplines of music and theatre education, facilitation, performance, writing and curating. She holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts degrees (University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg), and a Flute Performance Licentiate (LRSM). Lecoge-Zulu has performed in ensembles, bands and theatres across South Africa and Botswana. She currently teaches flute and voice at Brescia House School and St Stithians Girl’s College, Johannesburg.

Lecoge-Zulu is involved in experimental collaborative interdisciplinary endeavours where she investigates possibilities of merging music with other art forms. Hence, much of her work follows a multidisciplinary trajectory where she plays diverse artistic roles. She is the playwright of the tribute musical ‘Divas of Kofifi’, and co-researcher/co-facilitator in the creation of ‘Dear Mr Government’. She has collaborated on performances such as: Born in the RSA (directed by Warren Nebe), Rwandan genocide commemorative performance entitled Re/Naissance & Witness (devised by Theogene Niwenshuti), the solo dance work Full Fat, Low Fat, Fat Free (choreographed by Kieron Jina), and Godot-Logue in Gauteng, an adaptation of Lucky’s monologue in “Waiting for Godot” (by Samuel Beckett) where she explores the contemporary zeitgeist of South Africa.

Through these works, her involvement in the Playback Theatre community, and her company Black Petal Productions she addresses social justice issues in varying forms. Further, she explores the possibilities of experimenting and collaborating across artistc disciplines. Lecoge-Zulu’s work has been shared at numerous national and global festivals and conferences – most recently, ‘Die Irritierte Stadt’ in Stuttgart, Germany (2020).
